PE
The Teaching and Learning of PE at St Mark’s Primary School
Our Intent
St Mark’s Primary School strives to maximize opportunities for children, young people and all associated with the school to be physically active by promoting all avenues for activity. This includes the PE Curriculum, the school environment, enrichment opportunities, extra-curricular activities and wider opportunities across the borough of Lambeth. We want pupils to recognise the importance of physical activity through the provision of information and develop a range of physical skills linked to team and individual sports and games. We also would like students to have experience of competitive sports and develop the personal qualities that are liked to winning and losing in competitive situations.

- Foundation Stage: 45 mins x 2 lessons, 20 mins per day of active play activities.

- In addition to school based PE, children in Years 3, 4 and 5 have one long term of swimming each year and children across Years 4, 5 and 6 receive Cricket coaching at the KIA Oval through Surrey Cricket.
- We consider PE to be a very important part of our curriculum and therefore we emphasise the importance of children bringing their PE kit to school. In the event that they do not bring it, children complete a PE theory sheet based on their observations.
- The school takes its curriculum from both the National Curriculum and the Movement Matters scheme of work. In both key stages we teach gymnastics, dance, games, swimming and athletics with the addition of outdoor adventure activities in key stage 2. In the Foundation Stage, activities to support learning from the areas of ‘Physical Development’ and ‘Creative Development’ in the Early Learning Goals are planned daily.
COMPETITION
Pupils take part in a range of intra-school and inter-school competitions organised through the London Youth Games, Lambeth tournaments and Moving Matters School Competitions
BREAKTIMES/LUNCH
Children are able to:
- Participate in co-ordinated activities in the ball court
- Participate in free play within the playground – 4 square, tennis or create their own
- Use playground equipment – connect 4, hula hoops, skipping etc
- Use the gym and playground equipment
AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS
We aim to encourage all pupils to take part in a range clubs, and involve them in deciding the clubs we put on offer. Registers of clubs are kept to identify those who do not take part in (extra) regular exercise. A range of other clubs are also offered; these may include gymnastics, football, tag rugby, multi-skills, Tennis, Dodge-ball, Cycling, basketball etc. We provide reduce priced clubs for pupils in receipt of the Pupil Premium Grant and target underrepresented groups to participate more actively in clubs.
Impact
Based upon their progress and performance across the year, children will be assed against statements on Target Tracker to determine whether they are working Above, Below or At the expected standard for their year group.
